Amex's High Yield Savings account pays 3.00% APY on every balance tier and asks for nothing up front. What it won't do is take a dollar bill.

There's no debit card, no ATM network, and no counter where you can hand the bank physical money. For scale on the rate: the FDIC put the national average savings rate at 0.38% APY as of 06/15/26.

The Rate Is 3.00% APY With No Minimums and No Monthly Fee

The headline number is 3.00% APY, accurate as advertised on July 9, 2026. Like nearly all savings rates, it's variable, and American Express can change the interest rate and APY at any time, before or after the account is opened, without notice.

What makes the structure simple is what's missing from it:

  • $0 minimum deposit to open
  • $0 minimum balance to earn the advertised APY
  • $0 monthly maintenance fee
  • The same APY on all balance tiers, so a small balance earns the same rate as a large one

That last point separates this account from tiered products, where the advertised rate only kicks in above a threshold. Deposits are FDIC-insured through American Express National Bank (Cert. #27471), a Member FDIC.

No Cash Deposits, No ATM Access, No Branches

Cash deposits are not permitted. There's no debit card and no ATM access, and American Express doesn't run physical branches for this product.

Money reaches the account electronically or by mail, which means currency has to be turned into something else first, either a balance at a bank that accepts it or a paper check.

Mail for the bank goes to:

American Express National Bank, P.O. Box 30384, Salt Lake City, Utah 84130

This matters most for money you might need in a hurry. An emergency fund parked here isn't a card swipe away; it's a transfer that has to land in a checking account first.

Transfers Follow Business Days and a 7:00 PM Cutoff

You can start a transfer to or from an outside bank at any hour, through the website or by phone. Processing is a different story. Business days here mean Monday through Friday, federal holidays excluded.

A transfer started after 7:00 PM Eastern Time, or on a day that isn't a business day, won't begin processing until the next one. Holds can apply to deposited funds as well.

So a transfer you kick off at 9:00 PM on the Friday before a federal holiday doesn't begin moving Friday night. It waits for the next business day. Nothing unusual for an online bank, but worth knowing before you time a bill payment around it.

Amex Cardholders Manage Cards and Savings in One Login

For anyone who already carries an American Express card, the savings account shows up alongside it in the same Amex mobile app: one login, one place to check a balance and a statement.

The app is rated 4.9 out of 5 on the Apple App Store and 4.9 out of 5 on Google Play, and it's available for iOS and Android only.

App functionality for banking is narrower than what a full-service digital bank offers, which is the flip side of a product built around simplicity rather than features.

Customer Service Runs 24/7 by Phone

American Express staffs customer service 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at 1-800-446-6307, with a representative on the line. With no branch to walk into, that's the main support channel.

Higher APYs Are Available, but Most Come With a Condition

A 3.00% APY is well above the national average and above what many traditional banks pay, but it isn't the top of the market.

Several competing accounts advertise more, usually attached to a minimum deposit, a balance tier, a monthly deposit habit, or a promotional window that expires.

AccountAdvertised APYMain condition
American Express High Yield Savings3.00% (as of July 9, 2026)None; all balance tiers
Capital One 360 Performance Savings3.00% (as of 06/02/2026)Applies to all balances; no minimum to open
Openbank High Yield Savings3.80% (as of 06/29/26)$500 minimum deposit to open
LevelUp Savings4.00%$250+ in deposits per evaluation period; otherwise 3.00% standard rate; LevelUp rate applies to the first two statement cycles
CIT Bank Platinum SavingsUp to 4.10%Balances of $5,000 or more, for up to 6 months, with code CITBoost; $100 minimum opening deposit
SoFi Checking & SavingsUp to 3.80% (3.10% APY plus a 0.70% APY Boost)New accounts with eligible direct deposit, for up to 6 months

All of these rates are variable and can move. Promotional boosts are worth reading closely: the CIT Bank Platinum Savings boost runs for a 6-month period, and its standard tiers sit at 0.25% APY on balances of $0.01 to $4,999.99 and 3.75% APY on balances of $5,000.00 or more, as of July 1, 2026.

Two comparisons stand out. Capital One 360 Performance Savings is the closest match: a basic online savings account from another card-first bank, at 3.00% APY as of 06/02/2026, with no monthly service charge, no minimum balance, and the same lack of ATM access or cash deposits. Which card you already carry usually decides it.

SoFi Checking & Savings bundles checking and savings together, with no minimum balance requirement and nothing charged for the account, its service, or its upkeep.

It also releases direct deposit funds early, which American Express doesn't. Individual transactions can cost money there: global remittances, Instant Transfers, and outgoing wires each carry a fee.

J.D. Power Ranks Amex First; Trustpilot and the BBB Rate It Near the Bottom

American Express took the top spot in J.D. Power's 2025 U.S. Credit Card Satisfaction Survey for the sixth year in a row.

Public review sites read very differently: 1.3 out of 5 on Trustpilot, where reviewers cite long hold times and language barriers with representatives, and 1.1 out of 5 with the Better Business Bureau, where complaints often center on inflexibility with fees.

Most of that volume concerns Amex credit cards, not the savings account, which has no fees to dispute and few moving parts. The same phone system handles both, though.

The Account Fits Cardholders, Not Cash Users or Rate Chasers

American Express has been in business since 1850, and the savings account it sells is deliberately plain: a competitive rate on any balance, no fee to avoid, no minimum to hit, and a person on the phone at any hour.

Anyone who handles cash, needs a debit card, or wants a branch will be working around this account rather than with it.

Savers after the highest available yield can find bigger numbers, usually with a deposit minimum, a balance tier, or a promotional clock attached.

That leaves the existing cardholder, who gets the 3.00% APY on any balance and sees it in the same app as the card accounts.
